I have really enjoyed other books by Sue Monk Kidd, but this one just wasn't that interesting. It's a story that involves a middle aged woman who has a crazy mother, an affair with a monk & there is also a mermaids chair. While I didn't really want them to be eaten by zombies (Jalyth review) I was pretty pleased when it was all over & done with.I have really enjoyed other books by Sue Monk Kidd, but this one just wasn't that interesting. Enjoyable entertaining read. This was about Lillian going to help out, probably her only friend, while she tries to escape her own boring sad life. So she moves to another part of the country & becomes a Nanny to two of her friends stepchildren. These children, when they become agitated go on fire. Because the friends husband is a public figure in the government the children's condition needs to be hidden.
There was honesty & humour in the writing . The children were delightful.Enjoyable entertaining read. Good story. It involved Jack McEvoy, the journalist from 'The Poet' story(which is where I began my journey with Michael Connelly.) I really enjoyed this story. This time Iran is attacking New York city, with the intent of closing off Manhattan & attacking the US Federal reserve & killing the president also. This time I felt the tragic events were too drawn out but also not the main event of the book. There was a lot about the head lawyer of the company, his past, his present & how he was bought up. Then there was Josh, a journalist who was trying to salvage his reputation as well as his marriage & also his duties as a father.
Meanwhile there was a fire in a garment factory in Bangladesh, which hundreds of workers died. Who answers for that?
Sadly the ending felt like something Disney might like. This time I felt the tragic events were too drawn out but also not the main event of the book. This story was told through the eyes of a 13yr old Ojibwe boy living on a reservation. His mother is brutally attacked by someone but she is reluctant to reveal it to others. Joe, her son tries to help her to heal, also to get justice for the crime.
The story is a coming of age story but it's also a story of reservation life today. It incorporates some of the traditions of the objibwe & their stories & it's a mystery as well.

This was a story about the Salter family, set in Bundjalung country (where ever that is?) Kerry comes home to say goodbye to her dying Pop & stays on. The family is full of tragedy & anger, like a festering pimple that comes to a head & all this muck bursts out.

This wasn't one of the best Reacher reads. This time he's in a small town helping a lady find her twin brother. They end up caught in a mixture of bomb building, smuggling & poisonous gases. It felt bogged down with a lot of detail, not a lot of dialogue or much homour. If it was my first Reacher book I probably would have marked it lower. This wasn't one of the best Reacher reads. I feel bad that I am the only negative comment among a lot of very positive reviews. I so didn't like this book. I think the crime was excellent, which is why I decided to read it & it was a good mystery that I had to stay with because I had to know how it ended. What I couldn't stand was the lead character, not a detective, a bounty hunter. Her impulse control was missing all together, she had no people skills & was rude. Seriously if you make a strong woman to compete with other male leads don't make them worse than the men. I liked Cap somewhat, apart from how tired he was. How lonely & sad they both must be that they both are entering a dangerous situation & they are out in the open kissing?I feel bad that I am the only negative comment among a lot of very positive reviews. Wow don't know what to say about this one. It sounded so good on the blurb. The crime & the protagonists were good, with a fast pace mixed in with a bit of sexual attraction, all good.
But then mixed into that is a sheriff who seems to only be assessing men on their looks, she's meant to be a strong woman but is working in a job that she didn't apply for & she pretends that she isn't letting her daughter break laws when ever she thinks it's OK.
As for the mother daughter relationship. It's very witty & clever, quite a performance from them both. Saying that reminds me that the story had amusing bits throughout (I loved the small reading under the chapter numbers)but it felt premeditated as if waiting for a laugh, like a comedy club.
So that brings me to the critic on the back that said move over, Stephanie Plum. I don't think so. At least with Stephanie there are a few laugh out loud moments for me & her moments are things you are not expecting. This humour is effect only.Wow don't know what to say about this one. I hadn't read this author before & for me it started a bit slow. The story involves the Richardson family, four teenagers, two parents, well off & a belief that rules are good. Into their well structured life& comes Mia & her daughter Pearl. Mia is an artist working part time, trying to complete her project & living on the poverty line.
As their lives intertwine their differences become more obvious & as the town watches a court case people start questioning weather rules are the important thing or is just about doing the right thing.

I was disappointed with this book. The blurb lead me to believe this was the book I wanted but once I started reading it I discovered it was for Christians. What I wanted it for was to teach a young girl how to be assertive, not passive but not when dealing with the word or dealing with Christians, so it wasn't what the blurb led me to believe. I'm sure what I read of it is good teaching & I am not dissing the book....It's the blurb not fully disclosing what it was that bothers me.I was disappointed with this book. Pretty sweet read. George, is saved from a beating, by a young teenage single mother. This seems to put him in debt to her & later he ends up taking care of her daughter for her & that's her, really taking advantage of him. George loves it though & things start getting better for the child. Of course there are complications.
Even though the review says George is a curmudgeon I can't agree & think it is an over used word of today. It's a really nice word & I wish I could use it more authentically.Pretty sweet read.
