It took too long for the author to reveal the real reason why the main character - wife and son - were on the run for their lives. It seemed at first that they had to get away bec they were the survivors of the hit on her husband and that…

Captivating book - well written. Easy to follow. Difficult subject. Some controversy because the writer isn’t culturally relevant to the characters. I read it as fiction and tried not to focus on the cultural inaccuracies.

It's not very often that I would refer to a book as "gripping" but this book was indeed that. A woman and child's harrowing escape from the vengeance of a drug cartel takes them along a dangerous migrant route as many others with their own…

I can't think of many books that I would consider modern classics, but this has the feel of a novel that will last. It touches on the very threads of humanity that make us who we are. In spite of the controversy surrounding the author and…

This book is outstanding as a moving account of people caught between the cracks of life. In novels like this, it is important not to fictionalize actuals fact and, thereby, make accounts seem trivial or even unreal. The author does a…

I couldn’t put this down. Both tragic and hopeful. Riveting action and characters. Should be required reading for all politicians / bureaucrats responsible for immigration / refugee laws and their enforcement. A sign of our times that…

This story of escape and redemption serves its purpose. I agree with reviewer León Krauze that it’s not the “transformational work of art, aimed to inspire a deeper debate about violence, immigration, and American nativism” that author…

This was an amazing story about how dangerous it is not only to cross the border, but fleeing the cartel. The character was strong and her journey was filled with a lot of dangerous encounters. The writer gave an exceptional view into the…

Controversial book recommended by Oprah who was criticized because the author is not hispanic. About a mother and young son who flee Acapulco when drug lord has the mom's whole family killed. The mom's husband wrote an article about the…

I very much recommend this story about a mother and her 8 year old son fleeing from drug trade felons in Mexico toward safety in the US. This fictionalized story of a family’s horrible experience with the drug trade in Acapulco, Mexico is…

Not sure it would have got as much traction if it wasn't one of Oprah's books. It provides some education on what it is like to be a migrant and is certainly capable of eliciting empathy.

Absolutely loved it! I lived every minute of this migrant escape as I turned each page. It felt shockingly real to me and I learned so much about the cartels in Mexico and the migrant experience. I could not put this one down!

Very good read. There are really three different stories happening in the book. The strongest is the voyage from Acapulco to the US via La Bestia, and the coyote trip thru the desert. What the travelers deal with to flea their home is…
