“The Wife Upstairs” by Rachel Hawkins is an exploration of lives full of secrets. It tells the story of Jane (not her real name), who has been living on the run. After nearly getting run down by a rich handsome widower, while working as a dog walker for his neighbors, she initiates (or did he) a relationship. She maneuvers her way into a world of luxury where gossip is currency and the rich do not live like everyone else. Things are going well, and Jane really is falling for the guy, when it is discovered that his missing wife may be a murder victim. She and her best friend were presumed drowning victims whose bodies were never found, but now the best friend’s body has surfaced with severe head trauma. Secrets come out everything is being reinvestigated as murder. Is the man she loves a murderer? And what is making the mysterious thumping noises in the house? I enjoyed this who did what and it kept me guessing.
