Steinbeck describes the time two men George and Lennie share together as they search for a job as migrant workers during the Great Depression. Lennie has an intellectual disability, which causes him to behave like a man-child, despite his gigantic size. They find work on a ranch and as they work, Lennie becomes entranced by the looks of the owner’s daughter-in-law and becomes involved in an incident that threatens to destroy George and Lennie’s hopes and dreams. This novel would be a compelling read to those who seek a deeper understanding of the reality of the Great Depression or anyone who wants an emotional yet peaceful read.
