This books is a twist of horses, fairy tales, romance, and fantasy. It's honestly sort of silly how well written this book is. Stiefvater is a talented writer, that's for sure, and this if hands-down my favorite of hers. The story swaps between two characters: Puck, a girl determined to keep her brother from leaving home, and Sean, a boy determined to keep his title as champion of the scorpio races. But what exactly are the scorpio races, you might ask? Each year on Puck's island, people come from all around to watch the race of fae horses--vicious creatures caught from the sea and tamed for just this occasion. There's just one problem--these horses like to eat their masters. When Puck enters the race with her 100% normal horse, everyone thinks she'll die before she even makes it to the finish line, everyone but Sean. This book is just magical. There's no other way to put it. The threads of fantasy and reality are so well interwoven, you won't know one from the other. A must read for any YA fantasy lover.
