This Indie was made for less than $1M (Lee’s masterpieces Malcom X ($33M) and Do the Right Thing ($22M)). This is Spike Lee’s portrait of a Brooklyn African-American church in the 20th century. The importance of the Black Church is that it has been the only place of security and healing though 400 years of slavery, peonage, Jim Crow, discrimination and financial exploitation. Lee made this film with Indie money to avoid bastardization of the story by white financiers. If you have doubts about White control in Hollywood, reflect on the fact that the last 40 Oscar nominations for best actors/actresses have been 100% white. Very good despite the fact that there was little money to tell this story.
