Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell is one of the most heartfelt, deeply personal and beautiful albums to come out in recent memory. On this album Sufjan mourns the loss of his mother and his stepfather, remembering the time they spent together in Oregon when he was a child. Every single song on this album maintains the same stark beauty that Sufjan has shown himself capable of before. The album opens with the gorgeous Death with Dignity followed immediately by the equally touching Should Have Known Better, both songs containing gentle instrumentals and soft vocals setting the mood for the rest of the album. The album’s best song appears about halfway through with the stunning Fourth of July. The haunting piano plays behind Sufjan’s vocals. “Make the most if your life while it is rife” he sings before ending the song by calmly repeating “We’re all gonna die.” Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens is one of those rare albums that perfectly captures a feeling or a moment in time. I cannot praise it enough, that is why I feel this album deserves 5 out of 5 stars. - @Theowk of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
