Demy's whimsy is leaden and literal, and there is nothing magical about this fairy tale. The colors are garish, the clothes look like cheap, rented theatrical costumes, the set design is horrendous (except, of course for the Chateau Chambord, which looks great), the production numbers are ludicrous, and the "special" effects are anything but. Jean Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" (to which this is an obvious homage) did far more with far less. This film's sole redeeming quality is that it captures Deneuve's perfect beauty at its peak. All this failure of imagination, and it turns out that Demy was gay? You can't prove it by this turkey.
