Glasgow, 1965. Headstrong teenager Jack Mackay cannot allow for even the possibility of a life of predictability and routine. The seventeen-year-old has just one destination on his mind--London--and successfully convinces his four friends, and fellow bandmates, to join him in abandoning their homes to pursue a goal of musical stardom. Glasgow, 2015. Jack Mackay dares not look back on a life of failure and mediocrity. The heavy-hearted sixty-seven-year-old is still haunted by what might have been. His recollections of the terrible events that befell him and his friends some fifty years earlier, and how he did not act when it mattered most is a memory he has tried to escape his entire adult life. London, 2015. A man lies dead in a one-room flat. His killer looks on, remorseless. What started with five teenagers following a dream five decades before has been transformed over the intervening decades into a waking nightmare that might just consume them all. Runaway is a tense crime thriller spanning a half-century of friendships solidified and severed, dreams shared and shattered, passions ignited and extinguished, all set against the backdrop of two unique cities at two unique and transformational periods of recent history.

I've read 8 of Peter may's books, and enjoyed them all. This was just plain awful. I big snore. Every 60 something, male citizen of the UK's wet dream. Ugh

I really enjoy Peter May's taut writing style, insightful characters, plots, and his wry, ironical humour. A group of teenagers runs away from the strictures of their lives in 1960's Glasgow seeking fame and fortune in the bright lights of London. They repeat the performance with generational assistance in old age to right a long- ago wrong. Runaway is a gem.

Peter May writes riveting novels, and Runaway is no exception. In this remarkable stand alone adventure novel, May seamlessly toggles between past and present with the story of four runaway teenagers, members of a band, who leave Glasgow and head for London in the swinging sixties, only to return there as much older and more infirm men who seek to set right the consequencess of their youthful adventure.

Peter May has a genius for depicting time and place with an atmospheric reality that compels the reader. Emotional and full of great characters and lots of action, this story is no exception. It is a great read.

True to the title this novel is about Running Away ..
It wasn't what I expected from Peter May. However, I truly enjoyed this book & look forward to reading it again. It's an insightful and interesting story not lacking in suspense & mystery.
The novel is written in two time frames: 1965 and 2015, which are seamlessly woven together.
In 1965 four young men from Glasgow run away to London. Three of them come back to Glasgow after the disillusionment of London life.
In 2015 the same three now mature men run away from Glasgow to London to reconcile unfinished business.
Great read with an unexpected ending.
Highly recommended.

Peter May is quite a capable storyteller and this book is proof of his ability. He has the same deft ability to create situations in interesting locales that are full of subtle twists and turns resulting in a good read. This story would be terrific made into a movie. His writing reminds one of Robert Goddard who is another superb storyteller with similar stories of mysteries within mysteries, all ending with the unexpected.
