In a Sussex town on the southeast coast of England, a widely disliked art teacher at a posh private girls' school disappears without explanation. Meanwhile, detective Peter Diamond finds himself in Sussex, much against his wishes. His irritating and often obtuse supervisor, Assistant Chief Constable Georgina Dallymore, has made Diamond accompany her on a Home Office internal investigation. A Sussex detective has been suspended for failing to follow up on DNA evidence that linked a relative to a seven-year-old murder case. As Diamond asks questions, he begins to notice unsettling connections between the seven-year-old murder and the missing art teacher. Could the two cases be connected?

I always enjoy the twists and turns in this series, especially with the many doses of humor stirred in with them. Has there ever been a more entertaining 'team' than Dallymore and Diamond?? Could there be any situation worse than Diamond's visions of living in uncomfortably close quarters with Dallymore and arguing endlessly with her over every step of the investigation? ("The prospect of being with [Dallymore] for days to come, if not weeks, was about as appealing as gangrene.”) I loved the art students at Priory Park School. (“The three students turned their heads like meerkats.”) Hands down, though, my favorite character was Hen. I so hope she shows up in a future book ... or ten!

The police DNA test everything in the car and then don't do a simple ballistic test on the suspect they send to prison. What a bunch of idiots.

Excellent, every page a treat. I was worried that author Lovesay might be getting tired when his 14th in the series, The Stone Wife, was a bit off. Wrong, you can't do better than this series.

This was a great read; well written with a good ending and, several times, the writing just made you smile even with it being a murder mystery, I will definitely be reading more from this author as this was my first one.

I have just discovered this author. His books seem to be stand alone murder mysteries set in small town Britain. The author has a quirky sense of humour and his characters are interesting and quite human. The office tensions in the police force and the small cover-ups give the story an unusual backdrop. I found the lesbian angle a bit contrived but well handled and again that quirky twist that keeps me coming back for more by this author.

About two weeks ago, I discovered Peter Lovesey. "Down Among the Dead Men" is my second venture into Lovesey's works.
It does not disappoint. It virtually reads itself. Fast. A British setting, of course. Who did it? Not whom you expect it.
