Phelps explores what makes nations prosper--and why the sources of that prosperity are under threat today. Why did prosperity explode in some nations between the 1820s and 1960s, creating not just unprecedented material wealth but "flourishing"--meaningful work, self-expression, and personal growth for more people than ever before?

This is a great book to read, especially in conjunction with Prof. Michael Perelman's books (most notably his "Invention of Capitalism"). To understand why the trend from the 1960s skewed backward, or anti-progress, pro-financial capitalism, please read Donald Gibson's book, "Battling Wall Street: the Kennedy presidency" - - the reading of these three books will prove incredibly enlightening.
