"When E. Jean Carroll--possibly the liveliest woman in the world and author of the "Ask E. Jean" advice column in Elle Magazine, realized that her eight million readers and question-writers all seemed to have one thing in common--problems caused by men--she hit the road. Crisscrossing the country with her blue-haired poodle, Lewis Carroll, E. Jean stopped in every town named after a woman between Eden, Vermont and Tallulah, Louisiana to ask women the crucial question: What Do We Need Men For? E. Jean gave her rollicking road trip a sly, stylish turn when she deepened the story, creating a list called "The Most Hideous Men of My Life," and began to reflect on her own sometimes very dark history with the opposite sex. What advice would she have given to her past selves--as Miss Cheerleader USA and Miss Indiana University? Or as the fearless journalist, television host, and eventual advice columnist she became? E. Jean intertwines the stories of the fascinating people she meets on her road trip with her "horrible history with the male sex" (including mafia bosses, media titans, boyfriends, husbands, a serial killer, and a president), creating a decidedly dark yet hopeful, hilarious, and thrilling narrative. Her answer to the question [this book] will shock men and delight women"--

A funny story about the "metoo" movement. She looks at a serious subject with a humorous eye. Loved Lewis Carroll and Mrs. Bingley.

I really enjoyed this book. E. Jean Carroll has a great way of telling stories that are funny and interesting, even though they can be dark.

E. Jean has had a long career of independence and achievement. Yet even she has encountered a number of men of doubtful utility or virtue. How did these encounters affect her and why was she able to make her life successful in the face of these challenging people? The book gives us insights that may help others build lives of triumph, too. Highly recommend.

She should write another book, on how not to pick men. She seems to be the world's foremost authority on that subject.

I have also wondered what do we need men for so that was why I initially put this book on hold. Then I saw that the author was raped by trump so I wanted to read her description of and feelings about that crime. It was really a short chapter and she quickly decided to take her friends advice not to report it because he could hire a hundred lawyers and make her life miserable. This really supports the pattern we have heard about in trumps life. But the rest of the book was not that interesting so didn't read it all.
